Mobile Soundproofing for Producers and Engineers

Producers and engineers need to have clean recordings to mix down properly to get a professional result. They need to be able to listen to those recordings accurately and be able to make changes that actually improve the sound. Back slap, early reflections and other issues within your space can cause producers and engineers to make audio mistakes and over emphasize certain frequencies, resulting in mixes that sound bad when played back on other systems. For example if the room is too bass heavy, you might end up with a mix that has too little bass when played back on another system.

So how do you deal with these issues simply and efficiently?

In order for this to happen, the room needs to have sound absorption treatment added to stop reflections from hard surfaces, removing the reverb, echo and overall room noise. Sound absorption materials like the Producer’s Choice audio blankets can be added to the room to help treat, or deaden sound for the best quality recordings. Sound absorption blankets are easy to install and are designed to help quiet a space and remove outside interference, resulting in a more accurate listening and recording environment. If you hang a few of these blankets in your space you will hear the immediate difference it makes. Place the acoustic blankets to cover hard reflective surfaces to help stop the bounce of sound in the room. Leave 3 or 4 inch air gap between the surface and blanket to create a dead air space that will stop even more noise, especially in the higher range (like a dog barking).

When recording multi-tracks with several performers, simply deploy a few of our Producer Choice Blankets on our Universal Stands that can be used to separate them in a room and can accommodate an 8 foot blanket fully opened. An engineer can place a sound absorbing blanket right behind the player to block reflections coming from behind.

If a noisy door, window or AC unit is ruining your recordings, blankets on stands can be strategically placed to reduce the interference and help quiet a room for better sounding acoustics. Producer’s Choice blankets can be hung in the corner or off the ceiling as a sound cloud to reduce reflections from the ceiling.

If your ceilings are high, you might consider hanging some ceiling sound baffles made from the same sound absorption blanket material to break up reflective waves.

To block external noise, especially low frequency you would need a heavier sound proofing treatment like mass loaded vinyl. This material will help block low and loud sound waves and are thin and easy to install. The mass loaded vinyl is a dense material specifically designed to stop sound but it is not very strong and not designed to be used in construction under the drywall. Vocal Booth To Go designed a special reinforced limp mass barrier, that can be used on its own for sound proofing. For example you can nail it directly onto your wall or you can use it to sound proof your sound booth that you made.

For do it yourself vocal booth, or areas in your house that require special sound proofing treatment, we designed a multilayered composite sound proofing panels that have sound blocking barrier on one side and sound absorption felt on the other. If building a DIY vocal booth, the sound absorption layer should be facing inside the booth and the sound blocking on the out. On the other hand if you want to sound proof a wall, then the sound absorption felt should be facing the wall and sound blocking vinyl should be facing the room. This will considerably increase the sound transmission class of the wall.

“I’ve been using them for 10 months now. The sound is very controlled inside the room & I would say that the sound outside is considerably reduced. The blankets are double thickness over the outer wall and two internal walls & the window area is packed with foam & thick upholstery to cut more noise through that area. I play for about an hour a day & have had no complaints. The neighbors say they can hear me of course, but it’s not so bad.” Holmsteinn
